Abstract
Two approaches were taken to estimate the power effects on the neutral point of an unmanned aerial vehicle. The first approach was the solution of two simultaneous equations for the aircraft pitch stiffness, Cma. The second approach was the comparison of a computer code predicted, power-off neutral point location to a flight data estimated power-on neutral point. The approaches are explained and each was attempted.
Flight-testing was conducted with a UAV weighing 23 lbs. and a wingspan of 7.5 ft. The solution of two simultaneous equations was not completed due to flight-testing mishaps and time constraints. This failure led to the second approach. The computer code/flight estimation of power effects on the neutral point was completed. The result was estimates for the power effects on the neutral point and the change in the propeller normal force with changes in angle of attack, (CNp)α. Aircraft designers can use these estimates to better predict static stability of future aircraft designs.
