Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if the predictive validity of the 1999 Academic Index (AI)for North Carolina State University's freshman class differed by gender and ethnicity. The research design for this study used First Year Grade Point Average (FYGPA) as the criterion, and standardized test scores (e.g. Standardized Achievement Test-SAT), high school grades, and class rank as the predictor variables in multiple regression analyses. Results indicated different levels of prediction across ethnic and gender groups. Overall, the prediction pattern for African Americans, Asians, and women were consistent with previous research. Specifically, FYGPA was overpredicted for African American males, underpredicted for Asian Americans, and underpredicted for women.
