Abstract: Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) is an emerging Metro Area Network (MAN) protocol and has recently been standardized by IEEE as 802.17. The packet based protocol with its rich features aims to efficiently transport voice and video grade traffic unlike existing MAN technologies. In RPR, the ring acts a shared resource and is accessed by stations with an established fairness. In the research we present, we focus on the Fairness and Flow control mechanism of RPR. First, we implement the Fairness Control Algorithm in software to identify early issues with the algorithm. We then implement the corresponding hardware for the algorithm for a 10 Gbps RPR MAC. In the simulation part of our research, we observe and analyze the effects of configurable parameters on the behavior of the algorithm. We also give recommendations on choosing appropriate values for those parameters under different network scenarios. Lastly, we validate our implementation for two key functions related to RPR's Flow Control mechanism - Ingress Rate Control and Fair Rate advertisement.
