Title: Micro-stimulator design for Retinal Prostheses

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to design an integrated circuit (IC) to stimulate retina. The IC will be able to generate electrical stimulus specified by medical researchers. The IC is to be low power and low area, as it has to be implanted inside the eye. Specified area goal is to provide 1000 outputs in 5mm x 5mm implementation. Analysis is done to understand and explain the theory for power reduction. To provide large number of stimulus outputs, improvements in the previous design have been made. A number of circuits have been proposed to attain better performance. New circuit designs include active feedback output stage, design in advance process technology (TSMC 0.35 μm), variable power supply, better linearity, charge cancellation, variable output range and DAC. Layouts have been made to meet the area goals. A test chip was fabricated in AMI 1.6 μm. Measurement results have been found to be as predicted.
