The Significance of Large Storms on Pollutant Loading in Stormwater Control Measures

In North Carolina, Stormwater Control Measures (SCMs) are commonly sized to capture 1 to 1.5 inch "water quality" storms. Storms with greater than 1.5 inches of precipitation are assumed to happen infrequently enough that water quality SCMs do not need to be designed to capture them. In recent years, storms are becoming larger and more intense, calling into question the ability of current SCMs to sufficiently improve water quality if large storms are bypassed. This study aims to quantify pollutant loading from large storms in comparison to loading from storms less than 1.5 inches, over an annual basis. Water quality data for EPA Rain Zone 2 was compiled from the National Stormwater Quality Database (NSQD) and from studies conducted by NC State and University of Tennessee. Statistical analyses revealed that pollutant loading from large storms comprises a substantial portion of the total annual pollutant loading, suggesting a need to redesign water quality SCMs to accommodate large storms.
Novel Techniques to Enhance Physical and Biological Nutrient Treatment and Recovery at Rural Wastewater Facilities

This project evaluated technologies that combined physical and biological processes to enhance nitrogen and phosphorus removal at smaller rural wastewater treatment facilities – a crucial strategy to improve surface water quality in NC. Namely, the research was aimed at evaluating the use of 1) of biochar and 2) duckweed (family Lemnaceae, a floating aquatic plant) to enhance rural wastewater treatment. Two separate studies were conducted, but each study combined laboratory experiments and scaled-up tests at a rural wastewater facility to enhance and build upon previous on-site research by members of the project team. As such, this report is separated into two parts: Part 1: Laboratory and Mesocosm Experiments with Modified Biochar for Enhanced Nutrient Removal at Rural Wastewater Treatment Facilities Part 2: Development of Duckweed Varieties and Harvesting Techniques to Enhance Nutrient Removal in Wastewater
